From the smooth geometric lines of the unopened box to the soft rustling of tissue paper, there are few things in life that excite women and often men as much as a new pair of shoes. Why do these objects hold such a fascination for us? And what are the components that go in to make up the perfect shoe? The Gallery @ in Barnsley explores one collector’s obsession within this exhibition – “A Personal Collection: of Vivienne Westwood Shoes”. The Gallery@ is delighted to present this ultimate indulgence which shows how a private collector has built this collection over the last 15 years, choosing them, for their innovative attitude towards design and most importantly their passion.

This collection of shoes by Vivienne Westwood, who is best known as the creator of punk and new wave fashions opening the SEX boutique in the 1970s with Malcolm McLaren, spans the decades from the 1970’s and includes some classic examples of the innovation and passion inherent in the designer. The black ‘spike’ SEX shoe, the ‘hammerhead’ shoe, ‘pirate boots’ the limited edition collection with Nine West and the recent mass market collaboration with the Brazilian company Melissa, clearly demonstrates that she remains the undisputed Queen of British fashion.
Exhibition begins 13th May and runs until 17th July.
