The end of the festival season and thus summer is coming up fast, but there’s a couple of locations you can catch some raw talent; Bestival and Reading/Leeds have always booked upcomers and usually have a nifty eye.

From Bestival the pick has to be Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, a Camden based trio who can chill the blood and spur on the feet with their detached, icy synth that owes to 80s keyboard handy groups like Japan and Visage. New single ‘Dance The Way I Feel’ poses dreamily, punctuated by their curious vocals, echoes that demand and submit simultaneously.

Reading/Leeds offers the Bolton group To The Bones, a group that if you asked them nicely to turn it down would chew you up and spit you out. Recklessly ferocious and with enough fuzz and black-hearted guitars to endanger the well-being of your ticker, they’ve already supported QOTSA and 80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster and rightly so, if anyone is a match for those behemoths, it’s this lot.

While Empire of The Sun, MGMT, Passion Pit, and Chairlift take care of the international psych contingent, the UK might well cast a somnolent eye over Citadels who mix daydreams and sharp melodies into pop portals you can lose yourself through, emerging on the other side brushing sand from your feet and sunlight from your eyes.

For a little while there have been grumblings and mumblings about a grunge revival and with Pearl Jam dusting off their grave dirt to deliver a new album, what of the new kids on the block? A name that keeps cropping up is Dinosaur Pile-Up who ply crunchy riffs are batted between primal screams and the languorous style synonymous with the original movement. Though they’re firmly entrenched in the nuances of the 90s, they’re happily sans the draining knowledge they’re spearheading a youthquake and keep it raw and selfish in a way that makes your knees buckle.
