EA has released a triple whammy of January goodness for the New Year, including a sci-fi, fantasy and a third person shooter. There ‘s something here to suit all your needs in 2010.

The most anticipated game over the last 3 months is getting closer and closer to release (January 26). Mass Effect 2 is the sequel to the most successful sci-fi rpg to hit Xbox 360.  With the sequel being released a whole 2 years after the original, Bioware have had plenty of time to iron out the kinks of the original and vastly improve the gameplay and graphics. I was lucky enough to have a quick session playing Mass Effect 2 late last year.

Without giving the plot away Mass Effect 2 gives you the ability to create a new character or pick up where you left off in the original. With such variety and replayability you are likely to play for hours on end. Be prepared to miss meals, skip work and lose sleep. Bioware has improved the battle mechanics in Mass Effect 2 making it feel much more like a first person shooter rather than a third person shooter which often lacks realism. All in all Mass Effect 2 will be huge, whether you’re a sci-fi buff, role player or first person shooter.

Dante’s Inferno, is most well known as the first part of Dante Alighieri’s fourteenth-century epic poem. EA have taken the theme and developed it into a hack and slash fantasy taking place in the seven circles of hell. You play as Dante, who descends into hell after returning home to find his beloved Beatrice murdered. With high end CGI cut scenes between action, you almost feel like your watching a film rather than playing a game. The gameplay is much like Dynasty Warriors, third person hack and slash with vast numbers of demons and a 3d interactive environment.

Dante’s mastery with weapons and magic is amplified by the extreme force that is conveyed through fighting, you feel the power and strength behind every attack. Not only do you slay demons using your gigantic scythe and holy magic, you can gain control over huge demonic animals and become a rider, destroying demons by stomping, ramming and breathing fire from above. Dante’s Inferno is the perfect game to play after a stressful day at the office, release your anger by combining multiple attacks and slice through hordes of enemies in one go.

Army of Two: The 40th Day, much like the original, is based around two ex-military mercenaries who now work as a two man team racking up cash, shooting bad guys and betraying their friends. 40th Day is the most customizable shooting game I have seen, with everything from complete modification of your guns to the all new armor and mask customization. The ability to make decisions through out the game creates a feel of control over the plotline. The more dough you earn throughout 40th day, the more you can blow on creating extravagant guns such as the zebra striped sniper rifle and gold plated, diamond studded grenades.

Like the original, you must work with your partner; strategize and outwit your enemy that being said there is no harm in running out guns blazing whilst your side-kick picks off the survivors. If your sick and tired of generic first person shooters, 40th Day is the change you have been looking for, the third person view and the rpg-like customization is a pleasant change and the options are limitless.

Stay tuned for complete reviews on each of the games above!
