Faces, Time and Places

Symbolic, one of the world’s greatest collections of 20th century pop culture, is proud to present one hundred art works by music icon and Rolling Stones band member Ronnie Wood. The retrospective exhibition will showcase the rock ‘n’ roll legend’s personal and engaging record of an evolving culture centered on celebrity and rock ‘n’ roll from 1960 to the present day.

Ronnie Wood’s renowned musical career has sometimes overshadowed the fact that he is a trained, highly talented and successful artist, possessing an innate skill as a draughtsman. Brian Sewell, world-renowned art historian, has called him ‘an accomplished and respectable artist,’ an opinion also echoed by the fact that in 2004, Marvin Bragg’s prestigious Southbank show dedicated a one-hour special to celebrating Ronnie Wood – the artist.

Wood’s trained eye has led to a series of well-observed sketches of some of the world’s greatest icons that are illustrative of close, personal relationships. The Symbolic collection contains studies of fellow legends such as Jimmy Page (1983) and Eric Clapton. The collection would of course not be complete without Wood’s dynamic studies of the Rolling Stones, such as the 1979 drawing of Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, and Keith Richards jamming on stage when touring with their 1975 album, Black and Blue.

The carefully selected works act as a pictorial biopic of Ronnie Wood’s thrilling life experiences, guiding us through half a century’s worth of rock ‘n’ roll. As well as offering us insight into Ronnie Wood’s personal experiences, the works also presents us with an insider’s view into Ronnie Wood’s celebrated music career. It is fitting that one of the latest works in the exhibition (Essential Crossexion- Album Cover study c.2005) is Ronnie Wood’s personal attempt at recording his journey, illustrating his musical milestones with the Faces, the Creation, the Jeff Beck Group, the Rolling Stones, and his many solo efforts.

Also included within the retrospective are original set lists and handwritten working lyrics for the Rolling Stones, Faces, The Birds and the Jeff Beck Group dating back to 1968, which Wood sketched throughout his career.

Monday 7th – Saturday 12thNovember
28 Cork Street, London, W1S 3NG
10 am – 6pm

Screening: Hasta Los Huesos / Down to the Bone (Mexico, 2001)

If the Grim Reaper was Mexican he wouldn’t be so downbeat and melancholy, hiding under his hood and instilling the grip of fear into whoever he seeks. He would knock at your door with a massive grin; bottle in hand and some lively music! In Mexico, November holds the one day of the year that Mr Reaper hangs up his cloak and puts down his scythe- it’s the Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos.

The Day of the Dead is one of the most vivid and traditional holidays celebrated in Mexico. In this special edition of ‘We Don’t Speak Mexican’, this fun and beautiful tradition is brought to The Book Club with the aim to educate on one of the most important customs in Mexican culture. And of course we’ll be learning some handy Spanish phrases and words along the way! As with everything the Mexicans do, nothing is dull, everything is in full Technicolor, and they fully intend to express what a joyous occasion death can be.

‘We Don’t Speak Mexican’ asks each guest to bring along an image of a loved one who has passed on. Don’t worry if not, a drawing on the spot will work just as well. Everyone will have the chance to celebrate their chosen loved one by building an altar out of all the pictures along with special bread of the dead, Mexican hot chocolate, alcohol and flowers. Each of the items have a significant meaning and guests will be invited to have their faces decorated. Most importantly, guests will be asked to share their comical, crazy and touching stories of their loved ones as a way to make their memory live on. They’ll also be a pop quiz on all the Spanish sayings learnt on the night, so make sure you’re listening carefully to win some Mexican prizes! And as another additional treat on the night, they’ll be a short screening of fascinating animation Hasta Los Huesos / Down to the Bone; claymation at its very best.

The Disco Shedonists return to The Book Club after their summer festival antics with an old friend in tow – Bristol sound pioneer Daddy G. As part of Massive Attack, Grant Marshall has had a hand in making some of the most soulful, edgy and uplifting British records of the past three decades. His DJ sets are always straight out of the top drawer – spanning dub, reggae, hip hop, soul, garage, drum & bass and block party gems that hark back to his 80′s soundsystem days with the Wild Bunch. Plus support from Count Skylarkin & MC Honey Brown and more of that DIY garden party raving vibe, courtesy of Del Gazeebo and Peepshow Paddy. This night is not to be missed!

Daddy G
There’s not much one can say about this loping, deep-voiced musical behemoth that is Grant Marshall, aka Daddy G that hasn’t been uttered already in the many fawning plaudits that have peppered his lengthy career as a DJ, producer, performer and tall bloke in Massive Attack. His contribution to the Bristol band has resulted in some of the most soulful, edgy and uplifting records that this country has produced in the past 20 years – from Unfinished Sympathy and Hymn Of The Big Wheel right up to recent collaborations with the likes of Terry Callier, Mos Def and Snoop Dogg. Plus a very recent relationship with tastemakers Burial, whose collaborative single has been setting the blog world on fire.

Like his band, Daddy G’s DJ sets eschew time and trend to hit the mark on every occasion – as highlighted on his excellent DJ Kicks mix for K7.
