There is something incredibly haunting and wondrous about structures that have been left to rot. Whether there’s ghosts roaming the broken halls or the sense of eerieness that comes from seeing something so vital and impressive abandoned without a backward glance, many have been enticed to break through barb wire fences to photograph these crumbling monoliths.
Urbex (or urban exploration to us pedestrians) has been captured in a book of stunning photographs, compiled by Romany WG, and features mental asylums, palaces, monastries and factories. They’ve even gone to Chernobyl to snap a snow-covered old fun fair and rooms full of dusty gas masks.
Each photo is a compelling piece of work and it’s well worth having on the coffee table just to remind yourself how frail our existence and our industrial achievements are.
